Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED)
At the Autumn Budget 2025, the Government announced its intention from April 1st of 2028 to levy an additional component of Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) on electric cars and plug-in hybrid cars called Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED). Drivers will be charged 3p per mile for electric cars, and a reduced rate for plug-in hybrid cars. The 3p rate represents half the current average fuel duty charge per mile and means electric cars will remain the cheapest option for most drivers.
The final details of the duty are subject to consultation, which was launched on 26th of November 2025 and is due to close on 18th of March 2026. The consultation document, which has further detail on the proposals, can be accessed here: https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/consultation-on-the-introduction-of-electric-vehicle-excise-duty-eved
