New GB Type Approval Legislation: Cyber Security & Software Updates Introduced

 

We’re pleased to share that Statutory Instrument (SI) 2025 No. 1110 has now been published and will enter into force on 13 November 2025.

 

This SI introduces provisions for cyber security (UN Regulation 155) and software updating (UN Regulation 156) into the GB type approval scheme. The first mandatory implementation date for new types of complete and base vehicles is set for 1 June 2026. Implementation for multistage and special purpose vehicles (SPVs) will follow in subsequent years.

 

Where vehicle types already hold R155 and R156 approvals for use in other markets, these can be added to existing GB type approvals via the revision process. This can be done ahead of the mandatory dates, but we ask that such updates be included as part of planned applications, rather than submitted as ad-hoc changes, to help manage application volumes effectively.
